As we are permanently broke, and really want our own videomixer (for training, performance etc), we are looking into building one out of a pc and several TV cards.

Better not make it too big though:
Small box, 2-4 tv-cards, <15″ screen (iirc you have a small tft left-over) nothing more.
Perhaps the inputs on one tv-card can be used simultaneously? iirc I have one with both s-video, composite and coax.
